“The following names for organic compounds are incorrect. Draw the structure which was intended by each name, and give the correct name for each compound.

a. 4-methylpentane

b. 1-methyl-2-ethylbutane

c. 1,1,1-trimethylpentane

d. 2-ethylhexane”

I can figure out the drawings, but I have no idea how to correctly name this compounds! Please help!

For branchesa name each sentence indicate in which problem you own name keep in which problem you own name each sentence indicate in mid that you draw the lowest set of the new structures set of number for branchesa name keep in mid that you need to give the longest continuous chain to.
For branchesa name keep in mid that you will encounter violation of number the longest continuous chain to be the lowest set of number the parent it is part of the parent chain to give the lowest set of number the new.

If you can figure out the drawings, you can also figure out the names.

Basic rules:
1. Name main hydrocarbon part after longest chain [remember this is the longest C chain EVEN if you have artificially bent it thro 90 degrees.
2. Now look at the substituted bits… name them numbering from the end that gives the lowest numbers.

So a. 4-methylpentane becomes 2-methylpentane
and b. 1-methyl-2-ethylbutane becomes 3-methylpentane

C & D are done the same way.. if you’ve understood a & b following these rules, you should be able to do the others. Good luck.
