For your best bet would be to browse current books in college or university book store and decide for yourself which text is free.
The internet which text is free.

‘The World of Carbon’ by Isaac Asimov, Ph D

Anything non-fiction by Isaac Asimov will be comprehensive and understandable. His Ph D was in biochemistry.

He also wrote a number of fiction books and non-fiction in almost every major category in the Dewey Decimal System notation.
